What is WMS Wave Picking?

Wave Picking is used by management and workers via a warehouse management system (WMS) in order to support the planning and organising of the daily flow of work in a warehouse or distribution centre.

Essentially, Wave Picking is an application of short-interval-scheduling as groups of orders are scheduled into short intervals called “waves”, to initially simulate the flow for the day, consistent with the order departure plan and available labour.

Basic tasks of wave picking:

  • Organising the sequence of orders
  • Assignment of wave and its every function to a specific staff member for supervision and processing
  • To provide support to the control of the administration

Benefits:

  • Measuring of productivity within waves.
  • The labour cost is set within budget
  • On the staffing levels capacity of throughput can be estimated.
  • Platform to provide feedback for the performed work.

We recently created a PowerPoint Presentation to explain Wave Picking, and thought we’d turn it into a video too.

Watch the video to learn more about Wave Picking and how Optimiser WMS can help your business, then send us a message if you think we can help you.
