Driving efficiency at the Border Group with a new WMS from Optima

The Border Group

The Border Group is a privately owned group of companies that is involved in a wide range of businesses across South Wales ranging from property development to engineering and fabrication, hire of large plant equipment and cranes, timber/sawmilling, even broadcasting and PR.

Its 3PL division based near Newport, Gwent has 400,000 square feet of modern warehousing space with capacity for 25,000 pallets.

In 2013 some internal difficulties at their existing WMS provider caused the 3PL division to start to look for a replacement warehouse management system. After a review of the software options on the market, Optimiser WMS was chosen. Within only eight weeks of the initial enquiry this new, cutting edge, cloud-based warehouse management system had been implemented.

Optimiser WMS not only replaces the functionality of the previous system but has also introduced some new features such as automatic notification emails to end delivery points, better invoicing, and a much wider range of reports.

Additionally, because it’s hosted “in the cloud” (Optimiser can be deployed as “Software as a Service” – SaaS) the management team can now access their WMS anywhere, at any time – from home if needed.

Another key area of improvement has been time saved doing stock transfers between warehouse buildings, previously a quite laborious process. Manual keying of stock transfer out of one warehouse and again into the other impacted their operational efficiency. Now, with Optimiser it is a simple electronic transfer.

“We were rather skeptical at first about signing up for a cloud based system but we like it now” says Warehouse Manager Melvin Fuller. “Optimiser is fast and flexible and reliable. Upgrades or fixes that used to take 24 to 48 hours are done remotely on an automatic basis. The reporting is excellent and can be tailored to our customers’ needs if they prefer.”

Mel stated that the implementation went smoothly and was completed in less than three weeks -a significant improvement on offerings by other market leaders. Overall, the change to a WMS system from Optima was “a good experience” and our staff proved to be “great, and very knowledgeable”.

Although forced into a change of WMS supplier, the team at The Border Group now find Optimiser much better and faster than their old system. The software has a wealth of great features to be utilised and The Border Group looks forward to continuing to improve their warehousing processes using the power of Optimiser WMS.
